Directing customers needing printing services in Hatfield to the address of Minuteman Press, we now have to include names like Stanza Bopape, Jan Shoba and Frances Baard. These street name changes have historical significance, therefore we thought that we would explain who the individuals behind the names are.
Minuteman Press, Hatfield is at 158 Gordon Road, which is a one-way towards the south from Queenswood. It is also at the point where the previously named Duncan Street (one-way towards the north from Hatfield) joins up with Gordon Road to form a two-way street.
Duncan Street is now named Jan Shoba Street
Jan Shoba was a member of the High Command of the Azanian’s People Liberation Army (APLA), an armed wing of the PAC. Shoba was arrested in 1984 and served his sentence on Robben Island. After his release in 1990 he was assassinated outside his house in Atteridgeville .
Church Street has changed to Stanza Bopape Street
Minuteman Press Hatfield is also very close to the former Church Street, now named Stanza Bopape Street. Stanza Bopape joined the ANC Youth League while at Mamelodi High School and in 1987 was elected the first General Secretary of the South African National Civic Organisation in Mamelodi. He was arrested in 1988 and died in police custody.
Schoeman Street is now known as Frances Baard Street
Another re-named street in close vicinity is the former Schoeman Street, now Frances Baard Street. Frances Baard grew up in Kimberley in the Northern Cape and became a teacher. She was an organiser in the ANC Women’s League during the 1952 Defiance Campaign.
During the 1950’s she was national Treasurer of the ANC Women’s League and on the Executive Committee of the Federation of South African Women. She was actively involved in the Women’s March to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 which we commemorate with National Women’s Day. Frances Baard was imprisoned during the 1960’s. After her release she was active in the United Democratic Front. She passed away in 1997.
