- Divorced parents: If your own parents are divorced and neither of them remarried, you should include both their names in the wedding invitation. You should write “Mr Peter Smith and Ms Madeline Smith request the honour of your presence at the wedding of…” This way, it separates their names in the title but still shows that both parents are hosting the event. If your parents are divorced and one of them remarried, it is proper etiquette to include the new spouse’s name in the invite. For example, “Mr and Mrs Peter Smith and Ms Madeline Smith request the honour of your presence at the wedding of…”
- Extended family: While most people would love to invite everyone – including extended family – this isn’t always possible. If you’re struggling to narrow down your wedding guest list, consider inviting close extended family members only. If you want the family members to bring their children, the proper wedding invite addressing etiquette is to write: “Mr and Mrs Thompson and family”. If you aren’t inviting children, simply write “Mr and Mrs Thompson” and at the bottom of the invitation you could include a note about not being able to accommodate children at your wedding.
