Seattle Asian community set to celebrate Lunar New Year
One of the largest celebrations of its kind in the American northwest will take place in Seattle when the city's Asian community will usher in the Lunar New Year.
Close to 20,000 people from all ethnicities and backgrounds will flood Seattle's Chinatown-International District for the event, which promises to be a spectacle like no other.
February 2020 sees the start of the Year of the Rat. It is the first animal of the Chinese zodiac calendar. Rats are seen as signs of surplus and wealth, and symbolize the dawn of a new day.
Schedules are a wide array of colorful performances on the festival's main stage. Martial arts displays, lion and dragon dancing, Korean dancing, and Japanese Taiko drumming are just some of the extravagant shows visitors can see. Activities include Chinese yo-yo and calligraphy drawing workshops.
It is a free event, although visitors can pay $3 to be able to sample food items at various participating businesses. Sponsors and partners will have their brands on all official signage and given booths for community outreach, to provide samples for visitors and to distribute information. Festivals such as these are opportunities to use banner printing services.
The 2020 Lunar New Year Celebration takes place on Saturday, February 8 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. and will encompass the entire Chinatown-International District.
