Local opera devotees who are looking for a special date night for Valentine’s Day will likely want to put the Alexandra Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming performance titled ‘The Dramatic’ on their Calendars.
The orchestra will be presenting two evenings of Puccini arias, a Vivaldi concerto, and something a little more modern but aimed to be no less dramatic.
These two performances will reflect the passion theme in a dramatic flair, with highlights of the evening including the music from ‘The Godfather’ by Nino Rota. The music that inspired Rota to write the score will also be presented. The audience will get to enjoy some of Puccini’s beloved arias (songs composed for a solo vocalist) and works from Respighi’s ‘Pines of Rome’.
One soloist for the evening will be Frances Borowsky, the Mary Graham Lasley scholarship winner, who will be performing with her mother Cecylia Barczyk, who is a cellist. They will be playing Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Cellos in G Minor.
Love-themed duets from Madama Butterfly and la Boheme will be sung by Michael Brandenburg and Kerriann Otaño, who will be representing the Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program.
These two performances are scheduled for 8:00 pm on the Valentine’s Day weekend of Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14. The location will be at the Northern Virginia Community College’s Schlesinger Concert Hall, 4915 East Campus Lane, in nearby Alexandria.
