Festival brings Africa to Virginia

The 13th annual FestAfrica is taking place for two days this August in Silver Spring, and is presented by the Afropolitan Youth Association.

There will be a wide variety of activities to enjoy at the festival for those with African ancestry, or those simply interested in learning more about the culture. There are set to be over 50 performances of music and dance, fashion shows, a health fair, and information about community organizations. There will be dance and drumming workshops, honor awards, and vendors.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the entertainment in comfort.

Vendor spaces are still available. Costs are $550 for food, $350 for retail and arts and crafts, and $200 for nonprofit organizations. Fees will go up another $50 after July 9. Local businesses can also purchase advertisements in the program book that everyone will receive at the gate, for which fees are $125 for half a page and $200 for a full page.

Some of the vendors, who will likely come from areas like nearby Arlington, may invest in sign or banner printing services to make their booth more appealing to passersby.

FestAfrica will take place at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring from August 9 to 10 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm each day. Admission is free. To find out more, or to become a vendor, call 410-608-0420.
