The 5th annual Africa Festival is taking place this weekend in Washington, D.C., presented by the Mayor's Office on African Affairs (OAA) Multicultural Awareness and Community Building Program.
The theme of this year's festival is ‘From Africa to DC: showcasing diasporan diversity, building one city’. It brings thousands of visitors to D.C. each year to enjoy the art, music, cultural history, and the food of Africa.
This year, there is set to be a community fashion runway given an African twist. Everyone is welcome to show off their own fashions and people do not have to register in advance to participate.
There will also be arts and crafts vendors, hair braiding demonstrations, a parade of flags, face painting, and raffles. A government resource center will provide any information people might want to know. Confirmed performers include DJ Underdog, Sahel, the KanKoran West African Dance Company, and the Kignet Traditional Ethiopian Band.
Visitors from all over the area, including nearby Arlington, will probably want to attend this popular festival. Local postcard printing firms may help with advertising for this event.
The Africa Festival will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center on August 3 from 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Admission is free but attendees are encouraged to register in advance online at the Eventbrite site. For more information, call 202-727-5634.
