Chinese New Year Festival celebrates year of the Rooster

The Asian Community Service Center in the DC area will be holding its 10th Annual Chinese New Year Festival coming in mid-January.

Lion dances, a Dragon Parade and other cultural performances will be represented by those from Vietnam, China, Thailand, India, and Korea. The one-day event will be indoors and admission will be free.

There will be cultural performances, food, language and cooking workshops, activities for the children, and business booths. Since Chinese Calendars indicate that this is the Year of the Rooster, many activities will evolve around truth, since the bird is seen as a symbol of honesty.

Both native and non-native speakers here in Arlington are invited to participate in reciting two Chinese poems. Contest winners will perform the poems on stage with 11 other winners.

The Dragon Dance will start the festivities. The morning will have GuZheng, Han Couture Show, Sun and Moon Taji One, and Hello Vietnam Dance. A lion dance will open the following segment, which will also feature Vietnamese Folk Dance, the Opening Ceremony Child’s Play, and Majestic Sword.

The afternoon will begin with the Lunar New Year Parade followed by an Indian dance, a Long-Sleeve Fairy, and kung fu. The late afternoon performances will include Indonesian dancing.

The festival will be January 14 at the Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church. Times will be 10:00 am until 6:00 pm.
