As part of a month-long celebration, Walk Arlington is sponsoring a Walk and Bike to School Day to encourage students to be more active by using either their bikes or their legs as a means of getting to and from school.
The goal of this annual event, which is free, is to teach students about the benefits of exercise. At the same time, they will be doing their part to help protect the environment.
The event also promotes community awareness and has the support of local businesses and government agencies. For example, even the local library will hand out 3-D Walk Arlington bookmarks, likely obtained from a local printing company, to anyone who chooses to visit the library and request one. The sponsor of the event, Walk Arlington, is an initiative of Arlington County to promote the benefits of walking and encourages residents to find creative ways to walk whenever possible.
The website promotes safety and offers courtesy tips as well as providing information on local community ‘Walkabouts’, which are self-guided walking tours through various neighborhoods where walkers can learn about the history of Arlington and enjoy some of the beauty that surrounds them.
Walk and Bike to School Day is October 7, and the rain date will be October 14. For more information, visit the Walk Arlington website.
