A hula workshop, offered by Halau O ‘Aulani, will be run by two professional instructors – Kumu Hula Keith Awai and Kumu Hula Pomaika ‘i Krueger. The seven-hour event will be coming to Arlington in just over a week.
The first half-hour will be registration and check-in. That will be followed by the morning workshop from 10:00 am until 12:30 pm. Lunch break will be one hour and the three-hour afternoon workshop from 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm will be a continuation of the morning session.
There will be a $105 fee and group discounts are available. Registration will remain open until 5:00 pm on March 8.
Both instructors are associated with the Brigham Young University’s Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii. Kumu Keith was the center’s first kumu hula. He was part of the PCC for 43 years before he retired in 2016. Kumu Pomaika’i is presently the center’s Hawaiian Cultural Performance Specialist.
Kumu Pomaika’i will be teaching the old-style method, which will include hands work, mouth shut, ears obey, and eyes observe. He will also stress the kupuna values of seriousness (ke kuo’o), service (ke kokua), honesty (ka ‘oia’I’o) and love (ke aloha).
