Arlington festival celebrates Black History Month

Arlington will mark Black History Month with the 2019 Feel the Heritage Festival coming in late February. This will be the 27th year for the area’s celebration of African-American Culture and History.

Entertainment will include local talent such as FQYCEZ-U-Know, Soul in Motion, and “7” Step Dance Academy. Known as Justin Love, Ms. Toni Maloney-Miles will be the emcee.

Kids can get their faces painted, create craft projects, and join in giant checkers, Chinese checkers, and chess. The information table will hand out event passports, and when all questions have been answered, the passports can be turned in for prizes. Participants can place Plinko chips on squares, each having a name of a country on it, and receive a sampling of the country’s cuisine.

From 2:00 until 6:00 pm, a dental van will be onsite providing free education, dental screenings and treatment referral for children. From 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm, attendees are invited to write their views about their Arlington heritage and get pictures taken with their statements at the Arlington Public Schools’ photo booth.

A Soul Food Cook-off will have local cooks competing in three categories – side dishes, entrees, and desserts. Judges will be looking for flavor, creativity, and overall impression.

Local artisan and community vendors will be selling merchandise and passing out Flyers and Business Cards.

Feel the Heritage Festival will take place at the Drew Community Center, 3500 23rd Street South, from 1:00 until 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 23.
