Arlington celebrates Year of the Dog

2018 Chinese New Year Calendars will mark the Year of the Dog and celebrations and the parade will take place mid-February.

The parade will feature the traditional Chinese Dragon Dance, musical entertainment like the Ballou High School Marching Band and Kung Fu demonstrations. Chinese community clubs such as the Chinese Youth Club of Washington, cultural organizations and the Falun Gong Chinese spiritual organization will take part in the parade also. The red mythical beast, Qilin will be spewing sage “fire” to bring prosperity and serenity to all.

Children will be twirling Chinese yo-yos called diabolos. All 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac will be represented as marchers don animal costumes. The parade will end with the traditional lighting of the giant firecracker so everyone will be “bursting with good fortune.”

The Chinatown Lunar New Year Festival will include dance and music performances, children’s crafts, Kung Fu and Tai Chi demonstrations and poetry readings. Arlington families may want to try their hand at traditional Chinese Calligraphy, lion dancing, view the photo and art exhibits and some of the film screenings, enter the raffles, buy New Year souvenirs and collect giveaways. New Year events are often promoted using flyer printing and posting in the area.

The Chinese New Year Parade and Festival will be in Chinatown between 6th and 8th Streets on H Street in NW Washington D.C. on February 18th ,2018. The parade will be from 2 pm until 4:30, and the Festival will be from noon until 5 pm at the Chinese Cultural Center 616 H Street.
