Ice rink future unclear

Plans to build an ice skating rink inside Lake Memorial Park among locals, including Maryland Heights residents who frequent the park.

The St. Louis Legacy Ice Foundation has hopes of building an Ice Center in the park, using up 40 acres of the land. The project could take over a year, so the organization hopes to have it finished by the end of next year, but more than 6,300 people have signed an online petition to preserve the park.

According to resident Cole Pourchot, he would find it less enjoyable to exercise in the park if it were more populated and had an ice rink. Meanwhile, Patrick Quinn, the chairman of the Legacy Ice Foundation, notes that the land picked out for the rink, which is closer to the highway, only has a shed on it and used to be farmland away from the populated areas. He therefore believes it would have little impact on the currently populated areas, and says the ice rink would be open in the colder months when there are less people on the lake.

Quinn also stated that the rink was approved in late 2016 and this was followed at the beginning of the year with a hearing to discuss it, but residents are still invited to make their environmental concerns known.

If the ice rink is built, photos of residents skating in it would no doubt make for picturesque Holiday Cards.
