The Region 7 EPA Administrator wrote a letter to Chris Koster, the attorney general of Missouri, stating that The Army Corps of Engineers is working on a barrier to keep the nuclear waste inside the landfill safe. In mid-March, Koster wrote a letter to the EPA asking it to speed up executing the solution.
The landfill is located in Bridgeton and serves as the St. Louis County landfill. It receives a vast proportion of its waste from the local area, including Maryland Heights. Bridgeton Landfill LLC's official statement to the public said:
"The safety of both sites has always been our highest priority.
“Our neighbors and community are frustrated by years of delay since the Agency's decision to reconsider its 2008 Record of Decision. While the studies continue, we are committed to the rapid construction of an isolation barrier, once a plan has been approved by regulatory authorities."
