Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park in the Maryland Heights area will host the Gateway Dragon Boat Festival in August.
This is the 14th year of the annual event. Dragon boat is similar to the sport of rowing, in that there are paddlers stroking in unison, a caller keeping the beat, and a sweep steering in the back.
Each Dragon Boat is $1,000 for community or non-profit organizations, and $1,500 for businesses. Registration and most sponsorships include a dragon boat, safety floatation gear, Promotional Products such as a shirt, paddles, and a coach. Funds raised will benefit the nonprofit Operation Family Help, which helps families whose health insurance does not cover their medical necessities.
Athletes should bring canopies and chairs in order to relax in the specialized areas set aside for teams before and after races. Teams can also rent tables, chairs, and canopies at an additional charge. Teams will also have a designated time to practice and check safety protocols a week prior to the event. Additional time is available for purchase.
For others attending the festival, there will be music, vendors, food, beverages, and family-friendly fun. Alcohol will not be offered at the event, but guests are welcome to bring their own. Guests can attend and watch the races at no charge and see examples of an active life, teambuilding, and cooperation.
The festival is on August 15 with races starting at 8:30 am.
