Oak Park bakery proposes new offices

Turano Baking Company would like to build new offices in Oak Park.

The proposed two-story building would be directly across Roosevelt Road from the bakery it currently operates. The company made its proposal to Oak Park's planning commission recently, which gave it a positive recommendation.

This is the second time Turano has put its idea before the village board. The new version modifies the original slightly, including additional landscaping to screen cars parked in the lot from view. Anthony Turano said the company planned to add two trees and some smaller shrubs to the side of the property on Roosevelt Road, with all the landscaping done on the fence's public side. That would leave a substantial amount of room between pedestrians and parked cars – more than anywhere else on the street, according to Turano.

Roosevelt Road is the dividing line between Oak Park and Berwyn, where the bakery operates, and where it has been located since 1967. The new building would be in Oak Park, and would comprise two stories of 12,464 square feet each. The proposed construction would necessitate turning Scoville Avenue into a cul-de-sac, which would cut off access to Roosevelt Road. This would require a variance, in addition to those Turano is already seeking regarding street frontage, building height, setbacks, and landscaping.

If approved, the new building could contribute more than $100,000 annually in real estate tax to Oak Park.
