Witty play coming to Wilmington
A special little girl is coming to Wilmington, courtesy of the Wilmington Drama League.
The organization is presenting the play “Matilda the Musical.” The show is based on the book by Roald Dahl, who also wrote “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which was adapted for the screen as “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”
Matilda, who is intelligent and witty, also has an unusual ability—psychokinetic powers. Her parents are cruel, but during the first term at her new school, Matilda and Miss Honey, her teacher, begin to bond. Miss Honey recognizes Matilda's abilities, and Matilda finds a friend. However, the two conflict with the headmistress, the despicable Miss Trunchbull, who dislikes children and loves to enforce her harsh rules.
“Matilda the Musical” debuted in London's West End in 2011 at the Cambridge Theatre, and is still running. The show also ran on Broadway from 2013 until 2017, for 1,555 performances.

The play will run September 11 through September 20, and is directed by Chris Turner, with lyrics and music by Tim Minchin, and book by Dennis Kelly. Brochure printing can be used to produce programs for events of this kind.

“'Matilda the Musical,' the London import that opened on Thursday night, is the most satisfying and subversive musical ever to come out of Britain.”
Another critic agrees:
“ . . . 'Matilda' turns out to be an explosion of joy, the most exhilarating and flat-out best musical since 'Billy Elliot.'”
