What's Happening in Wilmington, DE…

Wilmington to get skate park

Wilmington officials recently announced that the city will finally be getting a skate park, a project that has been in work since 2001.

Wilmington mayor Mike Purzycki, and Kevin Kelley, the director of its Parks and Recreation Department, said the city will spend $600,000 on a new park on the west side of the city, at Lower Linden and Liberty Streets. The design of the park includes a bowl for skateboarders.

Mayor Purzycki noted that former State Representative Helene Keeley and former State Senator Robert Marshall granted the funding for the park to the city several years ago. The mayor also thanked Shawn Garvin, the secretary of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), Transportation Secretary Jennifer Cohan, and Governor John Carney for helping Wilmington to obtain land where the new park will be built.

A committee of the city council went on to consider a resolution to present to the full council, allowing the city to accept the land for the park from the Transportation Department.

The skate park is a dream of Kevin Kelley , who proposed it in 2001 when he was on the city council. It has been discussed, planned, debated, and then shelved numerous times, but now the park will finally become a reality.

Construction should start in September. Banner printing is often used to create decorations to celebrate the opening of facilities like this.
