Wilmington Grand Prix returns
After a two-year break, the Wilmington Grand Prix, one of the country’s top yearly criterium-style bike races, will be back in mid-May.
As has been the tradition in the past, the Monkey Hill Time Trial will lead-off the festivities. The rolling course will be through Brandywine Park on a three-mile route containing some tight turns. The final stretch will be the Monkey Hill Cobblestones assent. Cowbells will be clanging for the riders as they come to the finish line. This year, the event will be held May 13 at 801 W 18th Street.
The main event will be held the following day at various times. This ride will take participants on a one-mile, figure-eight, criterium (closed) course in downtown Wilmington. The start and finish line will be at 818 N Market Street.
The Major Taylor Community Ride, which is new this year, will be a 30-minute free ride for all ages on the Grand Prix course. This will take place at 11:15 am right before the pros and top-tier amateurs tackle the course.
The Governor’s Ride & Ran Fondo (big ride) will take place the next day, May 15. Governor John Carney, along with other celebrities, will be escorted by local police on a 15-mile bike ride beginning and ending at the Delaware Art Museum. The sculpture garden will be the location of the afterparty. Riders will receive swag bags including T-shirts sporting the event’s graphic design.
