Wilmington breaks ground on public square renovation

Wilmington officials recently started work on a project that will bring major renovations to a city landmark.

Mike Purzycki, the mayor of Wilmington, along with other officials, signaled the start of a project to renovate Rodney Square. The square was first built in 1921, and is the main public square in the city.

Deferred maintenance has caused deterioration, so a major infrastructure and aesthetic update is needed. The project has been divided into phases, with the first expected to be finished early in 2020, at a cost of about $7m. Flyer printing can be used to share information about projects like this.

Funding for the project is coming from both public and private sources. The renovations will include new trees, green areas, and shrubs; new recycling and trash bins; new tables and benches; planters; lighted fountains; an upgraded electrical system and new lighting; improved irrigation; and new paving and masonry.

The design of the renovated square also takes into account the fact that community members would like to use it for smaller events, as well as the larger, traditional events often held there. The main goals of the renovation are to make the square more accessible in general, and to provide better access to community activities taking place there.

In addition to Mayor Purzycki, Hanifa Shabazz, president of the city council; Samira Aird, the chair of the Rodney Square Conservancy; State Representative Stephanie T. Bolden; and Delaware's Governor, John Carney, were in attendance.
