Special holiday event chugs into Wilmington

A holiday event that is a fun part of the Wilmington Christmas scene is on the schedule again for 2020.

The Wilmington & Western Railroad just announced its annual Holiday Lights Express. The train ride is approximately 45 minutes in length, using equipment more than 100 years old, and the railroad has made some changes this year. It has added another coach for passengers to increase both the number of patrons it can serve, and the number of lights it can display. The event is called the Holiday Lights Express for a reason—the entire train is decked out in thousands of Christmas lights. People who live along the tracks often decorate their yards and houses to add to the fun of the event.

Santa Claus will not be on this ride since he is very busy at the North Pole, but will be on the W&W's Santa Claus Express. In addition, a diesel locomotive, not a steam engine, will pull the train.

State law requires that the air must be fresh throughout the train, so all the windows and doors will be open at all times. Although the cars are heated, the railroad suggests people dress for warmth.

The train rides begin December 4 and end December 30. However, they do not run every day, and the times of the rides are also different each day. Full information is available on the website. Flyer printing can be used to create schedules for events like this.
