New structure to tower over Philadelphia

A new residential block is being constructed in a historic part of Philadelphia.

The Scannapieco Development Corporation (SDC) is driving the initiative. It booked the National Museum of American Jewish History to mark the beginning of the work.

The project goes under the name of 500 Walnut. About $180m is invested in the development. When completed, the building will have a view over Independence Hall.

Cecil Baker + Partners were responsible for the design of the structure. The construction will comprise of nearly 40 condominiums. A print company in Wilmington may be used to gain publicity for the 26-story tower.

A terrace is a central part of the design, and Cecil Baker has said that the view is of historical significance. Robert Gorman, who is employed by Mahan Rykiel Associates Inc., helped to devise this special part of the tower to enable residents to benefit from the panorama.

Tom Scannapieco, the chief executive officer of SDC, has told the Philadelphia Business Journal:

“It's the most unique amenity in the building because of the opportunity to look at such a special view. That's what we responded to. We have a once-in-a-lifetime view and that drove us to do something very special.”

The terrace will span 4,000 square feet on its completion. This feature will be made accessible to individuals and groups. The provision of entertainment on the terrace will be a possibility.
