Two special events were held at Fort Carson, near Colorado Springs, on October 30.
On the day, hundreds of military personnel returned home from overseas. In total, 295 of the approximately 515 returning soldiers were from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, which had been deployed to southwest Asia.
One soldier, Sgt. Alan Schwarzman, had a real surprise waiting for him; his mother Ruth works at Colorado Springs' Audubon Elementary School, and made a huge poster for all the students to sign. When he got home, Schwarzman was greeted with more than 350 signatures from the kids, who were excited to be part of the project. Schwarzman said he was very surprised and pleased at the warm welcome.
Ruth Schwarzman said she plans to have her son visit the school to meet the students. She notes that most children have little contact with military personnel, and it would be interesting for them to meet someone on active duty who has been overseas and could explain the missions, and what it is like to be part of the armed forces.
Sgt. Schwarzman, for his part, said he appreciates the support not only of the children, but of the entire Colorado Springs community.
Officials might consider creating Banners saying “Welcome Home” and other similar messages to hang throughout the city, as a special thank you to the soldiers.
