What's Happening in Temecula, CA…

Temecula getting a color splash

Sam Hick’s Monument Park is about to get more colorful. The Temecula Valley Museum is sending out a call for artists who like to work in yarn.

Local yarn artistes are invited to exhibit their creations in an unusual “gallery space”. Each participating master will reserve a particular park feature, such as trees, benches, railings, or lampposts, and “splash” the selected elements with crocheted or knitted creations.

The novel approach allows artists a showcase opportunity while accomplishing a civic improvement. Jeff Comerchero, Temecula Community Services District President, said:

"A splash of color on benches and lamp posts will create a vibrant look and friendly summer atmosphere for visitors to the park, drawing attention to the park and museum."

This is the first year of the Yarn Splash in Temecula. The creations will be installed in time for the Annual Street Painting Festival on June 21 and, if the weather cooperates, will remain displayed throughout the summer.

Events such as the Street Painting Festival and the Yarn Splash are a draw that brings residents and visitors to the city’s downtown. The benefit is not lost on the business community; from specialty dress stores to shops offering printing services, more people downtown translates to greater sales opportunities.

The Temecula Valley Museum is hopeful the Yarn Splash will prove popular on all fronts, and continue as an annual event. Sam Hick’s Monument Park is located in Old Town at Moreno and Mercedes Streets.
