Irvine increases number of council seats

A joyous crowd was on hand to at the Irvine City Council Chamber as, for the first time in the city's history, a city council exceeding five members assumed office.

After taking their oaths, longtime Councilmember Kathleen Treseder joined incoming Councilmembers Melinda Liu, and James Mai and William Go on the Council dais. They form the new council with newly elected Mayor Larry Agran and re-elected Councilmember Mike Carroll.

Following a special election on April 15th 2025, the seventh and final member will join these council members to take the Council seat that Agran left empty when he was promoted to Mayor. Any documents published by such a group are likely to feature official Letterheads and the new roles will required updated Business Cards.

Following the seating of the new Council members, Agran presented a spontaneous speech regarding the events' significance where he said:

“Now as we move from a five-member City Council to a seven-member City Council, and as we provide for district representation that will allow Councilmembers to more clearly focus on the problems and possibilities of our neighborhoods and villages, I believe we are on the verge of becoming an even greater city.”

With six of the council members chosen by their districts and the mayor chosen by a citywide vote, this will be the first that the city has ever had a council made up of seven members. This year's March primary election saw Irvine voters accept the change.
