Southamptons Community Chest initiative grows

Southampton City Council wants more organisations to claim Community Chest grants.

The council has already enabled community groups to receive £48,000 in 2017. The hope is that an extra £52,000 may be accessed through the Community Chest policy. Stationery printers from Southampton Hedge End might get more orders if the local third sector receives a further boost.

Satvir Kaur, a councillor with responsibility for the general health of communities, explained:

“Southampton is only as good as its people, so we remain committed to supporting those who are trying to make it a better place for everyone. We recently doubled the Community Chest grant which shows our commitment to empowering communities to do the great work they do.”

Eligibility for the grants is restricted. Community groups or voluntary organisations that wish to apply for the resources must have a vision to support residents of the city. To be accepted by those in charge of the fund, a group has to have limited income.

If a community group can show it gets by on less than £250,000 each year its application could well receive a positive response. A yearly income below £50,000 should give an applicant priority over those organisations with more money coming in.

The Community Chest approach has been implemented for more than three decades. In that time, it has made a wide variety of projects possible.
