New annual event to highlight Aboriginal-Metis women

The 1st annual Aboriginal-Metis Ladies Open Broomball Tournament is taking place this April over three days. It is presented by the Wakotaski Pimatisiwin Organization.

The tournament will consist of 32 games, with each team playing a minimum of four games apiece before the elimination rounds. Teams are expected to come mainly from Ontario and Quebec. There is a fee of $2,500 per team and competition is limited to 12 teams; all fees must be paid in full by March 31st. There are cash prizes of $10,000 for champions, $8,000 for finalists, $6,000 for consolation champions and $4,000 for consolation finalists.

The games will be broadcast on Wawatay Radio, which reaches approximately 133 communities. It is probably that in addition to the teams playing, there will be plenty of people in the stands to enjoy this inaugural event; it is expected to be a large boost to the economy of Timmins.

No doubt this event is being widely advertised in Northern Ontario and Quebec. Organizers may also choose to invest in banner printing services from Timmins companies to draw attention to each of the teams competing; Banners can be hung around the rinks while they are playing.

The Aboriginal-Metis Ladies Open Broomball Tournament will be held at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex in Timmins from April 18th to 20th. For more information about competing or attending the tournament, call 705-523-9523.
