One of the most well known and well loved feline crew members of the CSS Acadia in Halifax has retired from his position on ship, and many came out to bid him a fond farewell.
Named after the famous Viking “ Erik the Red”, the cat has served in his position of rodent catcher on the ship for the past 15 years. He first came aboard in 1999, when he was just a hungry stray kitten who followed Stephen Read, who is the Acadia’s ship keeper, back to the boat where he lived.
He soon became a fixture on Halifax’s waterfront historic properties, catching mice and rats wherever he went. He and Mr. Read soon became fast friends and have been working side by side ever since. He further noted that Erik is the best mouser the Acadia has ever had.
Erik is well known on the waterfront, and has become a popular fixture there. Tourists from all over would take his photo and send them in to Mr. Read, and dozens came out to wish him a happy retirement.
