Halifax Citadel to host Canada Day celebration

This Canada Day, Halifax’s Citadel will be joining other historic sites all across the country that will be celebrating the nation’s 152nd birthday with a free day of festivities the whole family can enjoy.

The fort, which harks back to the early days of the city and helped to keep its harbour safe from attack, has been reconstructed and offers a glimpse into Halifax’s history. Families are invited to climb the hill so they can be part of the festivities that have been planned for the site, and they are scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon.

Once the clock strikes noon, the celebration will open with a firing of the iconic gun, and this will be followed by a traditional 21 musket salute. The 78th Highlanders will be giving performances that feature bagpipes, drums and other instruments, and they will also be slicing and serving Canada Day cake to those in attendance.

Along with the one-day-only attractions, the fort will be open for visitors to tour the fort, which was built over 200 years ago. An event like this can be a lot of fun for young and old alike, and Print shops can provide stickers, activity sheets, flag lapel pins, and other items that can make a holiday activity even more special.

While the Citadel’s Canada Day party will begin at noon, the fort will be open to visitors starting at 9:00 am. It is located atop Citadel Hill in Halifax.
