A beluga whale has been spotted in the waters of Halifax harbour, but it is believed that this rare visitor has now moved on.
The small, white and very social whale was seen swimming by members of the public, and the Marine Animal Response Society had been keeping tabs on it to make sure it was doing alright.
According to the society, belugas tend to wander over large portions of the ocean, but they are not often seen in this area. It felt that it may have been young and following a school of fish or distracted by a noise and become separated from its pod.
The creatures are reportedly quite social, and the fear was that the beluga would be attracted by the people who were trying to get a better look at it. This could have led to the whale coming into contact with boats, nets, or other dangers that it would not encounter in more open areas.
