Melway fuels Ringwood Costco rumour

Street directory publishing company Melway has fuelled the rumour that Costco is planning a new store in Ringwood by labelling the old Ringwood Market site as a “Proposed Costco” in its new 2012 edition.

Both international retailer Costco and Eastland based QIC Global Real Estate, the current owners of the site, are staying quiet about the issue.

The Leader says:

“It has been almost a year since the Leader first reported on speculation the US retail giant hoped to build on the site, and comes on the back of Casey Council’s revelations late last year that Costco had ‘freely’ disclosed Ringwood would be the location of a second Melbourne warehouse.”

Confirmation is not forthcoming though yet. Robert Carter, managing director of QIC Global Real Estate said negotiations with prospective tenants for the market site, not far from Heathmont, are ongoing and that they do not know where Melway received its information. Likewise, Kyla White from Costco said that the international retailer was looking at multiple locations, and had also not given information to Melway.

Maroondah Council planning director Phil Turner said:

“At this stage council is not in a position to provide any further comment about the former Ringwood Market site.”

The Leader also reported that former Mayor Tony Dib who had previously suggested that Costco was going to purchase the site, but is now not confirming details.

Directory printing company Melway's publishing director Murry Godfrey said that staff had checked the information with multiple sources like council, newspapers and local residents before printing “Proposed Costco” on the market site.
